Mammals of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary

The Western Ghats are home to a healthy diversity of mammals, including some species found nowhere else on earth, and numerous large mammals. In the section of the ghats falling within Goa's boundaries, some large mammals - namely Tiger and Asian Elephant - are conspicuous by their absence, recorded only from sporadic sightings in border areas of the state.  Despite this, the mammal list of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary remains impressive. Continued pressure on suitable habitats, and poaching of some species on a local level does, however, mean that populations of many species in Goa are restricted, and most mammals are wary of humans, making them less easy to see here than elsewhere in India.
